Wisdom teeth come through last, usually in the late teens or twenties, and often there isn't room for them. When one is impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed or damaging the tooth beside it, removal is the sensible option. At City Dental Care on Earl Grey Street we assess with an OPG X-ray — and a CBCT scan where the roots sit close to the nerve — both in-house, and carry out simple and surgical extractions under local anaesthetic.

When a Wisdom Tooth Should Come Out
- Repeated pain or infection of the gum over a partly-erupted tooth
- Decay in the wisdom tooth, or in the tooth in front of it, because the area can't be cleaned
- An impacted tooth pressing on the neighbouring tooth
- A cyst or other change around the tooth seen on an X-ray
A wisdom tooth that has come through fully, can be cleaned and isn't causing trouble is usually best left where it is — we don't remove teeth that don't need removing.
What Happens
Assessment and X-ray:
An OPG shows the position of the tooth and its roots. Where the roots sit near the nerve in the lower jaw, a CBCT scan - also in-house - shows exactly where, so the extraction is planned safely.
Simple or surgical:
A tooth that has come through can often be removed in one piece. One that is under the gum or bone needs a small incision and sometimes sectioning - a surgical extraction. You'll know which before you book.
The appointment:
Local anaesthetic, checked before we begin. You'll feel pressure and movement, not pain. Stitches, if used, usually dissolve on their own.
Aftercare:
Written instructions, what to eat, how to keep the socket clean, and what's normal versus what to call us about. A review if needed.
Recovery — Honestly
Expect the first two or three days to be the sorest, with some swelling; most people are back to normal within a week or two, longer for a surgical extraction. Ordinary pain relief usually covers it. A small number of sockets heal slowly (“dry socket”) — it's uncomfortable rather than dangerous, and we treat it quickly, which is why we tell you what to look out for.
