What Composite Bonding Is
A resin matched to your tooth colour is applied straight onto the tooth, sculpted by the dentist to the shape you've agreed, then hardened with a light and polished. Because it's added to the tooth rather than cut into it, your own enamel is left largely untouched — which is the main reason many people choose bonding over veneers for smaller changes.
Edge Bonding vs Full Bonding
Edge bonding (from £175 per tooth):
Repairs and reshapes the biting edge - chipped corners, uneven lengths, small gaps. The rest of the tooth is left as it is.
Full composite bonding (from £350 per tooth):
Resin over the whole front surface of the tooth - to change its shape, colour and proportions. Often done on several front teeth together for an even result.
How It Works
Consultation:
Your dentist checks your teeth and gums, listens to what you'd like to change, and tells you honestly whether bonding will get you there - or whether whitening first, aligners, or veneers would serve you better.
Plan and price in writing:
Which teeth, edge or full bonding, and the total cost - before anything starts. Whitening is usually done first if you want it, so the resin can be matched to your new shade.
The appointment:
Little or no drilling for most cases. The resin is layered, shaped and light-cured tooth by tooth, then polished.
Aftercare:
Composite can stain and chip, so we'll tell you what to avoid, and a check at your routine exams keeps it looking its best. Repairs are straightforward.
Who Bonding Suits — and Who It Doesn't
Bonding works well for:
- Chipped or worn edges
- Small gaps between front teeth
- Teeth that look short, uneven or slightly misshapen
- Discolouration that whitening alone won't fix
It isn't the right tool for everything. Crowded or rotated teeth are usually better straightened first with Invisalign; heavily broken-down teeth may need veneers or crowns; and bonding on a tooth that takes heavy biting forces will chip sooner. Your dentist will say which applies to you.
