NHS dentists in Edinburgh taking new patients: our list is open

Many people in Scotland assume that no NHS dentist is taking new patients. At City Dental Care the answer is different: our NHS list is open, we have capacity right now, and you can register with us and book your first NHS examination online in minutes. There is no waiting list — new NHS patients book directly into available appointments and choose a time that suits them, including evening slots, because we are open until 8pm Monday to Thursday and until 5pm on Fridays.

The gap between having an NHS dentist and actually seeing one is wider than most people realise. Public Health Scotland's data shows that, as of 31 March 2026, an estimated 95.1% of Scotland's population was registered with an NHS dentist — yet only 62.1% of those registered patients had been seen within the last two years. That leaves roughly two million registered Scots who have not been near their NHS dentist in two years or more. How NHS dentistry works in Scotland

Scotland's NHS dental system is different from England's, and if you have moved here from elsewhere in the UK the differences are worth knowing. NHS Scotland sets a fee for each individual item of treatment, so what you pay depends on the treatment you actually have. The NHS provides all treatment necessary to secure and maintain your oral health; some treatments, mainly cosmetic ones, are not available under the NHS, and you may choose to have those privately.

Three rules shape what an NHS patient pays. NHS dental examinations are free for everyone in Scotland, not just for exempt groups. For treatment, you pay 80% of the NHS fee for each item, capped at £384 per course of treatment — anything beyond that is covered by the NHS. And some larger NHS treatment plans need approval from NHS Scotland before treatment starts — we'll tell you if yours does, and what it costs, before anything begins. Who pays nothing at all

Many NHS patients pay nothing for treatment as well as for examinations. Under-26s, pregnant women and new mothers, and people on certain benefits are exempt from NHS treatment charges in Scotland. If you are exempt, the £10 appointment-holding fee described below is refunded in full.

Whether you are exempt or not, you know the cost before anything happens. For private treatment, or for anything the NHS does not cover, we provide a precise cost breakdown before starting any procedure, so you are fully informed.

The £10 appointment-holding fee, explained

When you book an NHS appointment online through our portal we take a £10 appointment-holding fee, which secures your slot. Appointments booked by phone, including NHS emergency appointments, carry no holding fee. It is not a charge for the examination: the £10 is credited against any treatment you go on to have, and refunded in full if you need no treatment or are exempt from NHS charges, so the examination itself stays free.

How to register as a new NHS patient

Registration is simple. Book a New Patient NHS Exam through our online booking system, or call us on 0131 228 2442. There are no forms to complete before you book — registration happens as part of your first visit. NHS registration is required for NHS services, and appointments are readily bookable.

At that first appointment your dentist examines your teeth and gums, takes any x-rays needed, and explains exactly what — if anything — needs doing, what NHS Scotland covers, what you could choose to have privately alongside it, and what everything costs before anything happens.

If you have been a private patient elsewhere, or have not seen a dentist for years, the process is the same: book the New Patient NHS Exam and come in. Coming back takes five minutes.

Once you are registered, please give 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel an appointment, to avoid any charges. In rare cases a registration can be ended early — for multiple missed appointments or late cancellations, accumulating bad debt, or inappropriate behaviour at the practice. If that ever happens we explain the reason and help with the next steps, and you can contact your local Health Board for further guidance.

Can you mix NHS and private care? Yes

In Scotland you are entitled to combine NHS and private dentistry in a hybrid treatment plan, and many of our patients do exactly that. Your check-ups, hygiene and health-focused care can stay on the NHS, while you choose private options where they matter to you — whitening alongside an NHS course of treatment, for example, or Invisalign while remaining an NHS patient. Choosing something privately never affects your NHS registration with us, and the choice stays yours.

The NHS is designed to keep your mouth healthy: examinations, fillings, extractions, root canal treatment, dentures and other clinically necessary care, including inlays and onlays where appropriate. What it generally does not fund is treatment chosen for appearance — teeth straightening for cosmetic reasons, teeth whitening, composite bonding and veneers, and dental implants in most circumstances. For any private treatment we give you an upfront estimate, so you can decide with the figures in front of you.

For patients registered with us, our NHS treatments include root canal treatment, crowns and inlays, bridges, planned (non-urgent) extractions, dentures and night guards (occlusal splints).

Free replacements for NHS work

NHS treatment in Scotland comes with a replacement rule worth knowing about. If a filling, root filling, inlay or crown that we provided under the NHS has to be repaired or replaced within 12 months, you are not charged for it while you remain registered with us — unless the treatment was temporary, it was provided against our advice, the tooth has had private treatment or non-temporary treatment at another practice in those 12 months, the repair is needed because of an accident, or a different treatment is needed because a satisfactory repair or replacement is not possible. Another dentist will not provide the replacement free of charge unless prior arrangements have been made.

Emergency NHS care during opening hours

We also provide emergency dental care during regular hours for urgent problems such as tooth extractions and fillings. It is one of the key NHS treatments we offer, alongside routine check-ups, fillings and root fillings, inlays and crowns, and crown replacements — and whether you need a routine check-up or urgent care, we bring the same commitment to transparency and affordability. For an NHS emergency, call 0131 228 2442 and reception will do their best to see you the same day. An NHS emergency visit ("unscheduled care") costs £17.32 on the NHS Scotland fee scale from 1 November 2025. That covers the assessment and the emergency treatment itself, such as a dressing, draining an abscess or re-cementing a crown; X-rays and any further treatment, such as an extraction, are charged on top at NHS rates. If you're under 26 or exempt from NHS charges, there's no charge: the NHS covers the fees for you.
