NHS & You

What NHS Treatment Does City Dental Care Offer?

At City Dental Care, we offer comprehensive NHS dental care to maintain your oral health. Whether you need a routine check-up or urgent care, we dedicate ourselves to providing top-quality treatment with transparency and affordability. The NHS provides all treatment necessary to secure and maintain your oral health. There are some treatments (mainly cosmetic) which are not available under the NHS, and you may choose to have these privately.

Key NHS treatments we provide:

  • Routine dental check-ups
  • Dental fillings and root fillings
  • Dental crown replacements
  • Inlays and crowns
  • Emergency dental care during regular hours

Private cosmetic treatments, such as veneers, whitening, or Invisalign, are available. We'll provide you with an upfront estimate for any private treatments.

Replacements Free of Charge

If you are 18 or over and a filling, root filling, inlay or crown provided by City Dental Care under the NHS within the last 12 months has to be replaced, you will not be charged if you return to us, unless:

  • The treatment was temporary
  • It was provided against our advice
  • The replacement is necessary because of an accident
  • A different treatment is needed because a satisfactory replacement is not possible

Another dentist will not provide replacements free of charge unless prior arrangements have been made.

Understanding NHS and Private Treatment Costs

At City Dental Care, we believe in clarity regarding treatment costs. Here's how NHS charges work in Scotland:

  • Examinations are free for everyone in Scotland — there is no charge for an NHS check-up.
  • Treatment costs 80% of the NHS fee for each item of treatment you have, and you will never pay more than £384 for a single course of treatment — anything beyond that is covered by the NHS.
  • Many people pay nothing at all — under-26s, pregnant women and new mothers, and people on certain benefits are exempt from NHS treatment charges.

For private treatments like cosmetic dentistry or services not covered by the NHS, we will always provide a precise cost breakdown before starting any procedure, ensuring you're fully informed.

NHS Registration and Appointments

City Dental Care offers both NHS and private dental treatments in Edinburgh. NHS charges are set by NHS Scotland for each item of treatment, and private charges are provided upfront with a detailed estimate. We also offer emergency dental care during regular hours for urgent issues like tooth extractions and fillings.

NHS registration is required for NHS services. Please give 24 hours' notice for cancellations to avoid any charges. Repeated failure to attend or short-notice cancellations may result in registration termination.

Ending Your Registration

In rare cases, it may be necessary to end your registration early. This could happen due to:

  • Multiple missed appointments or late cancellations
  • Accumulating bad debt
  • Inappropriate behaviour at the practice

If this occurs, we'll explain the reason and assist with the next steps. If you need further guidance, you may contact your local Health Board.
