How often should I have a check-up?

It depends on your teeth and gums - your dentist sets the interval after each examination, commonly between six months and a year for adults with healthy mouths, more often if there's active decay or gum disease.

What does a new patient examination include?

A full examination of your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth (including a mouth-cancer check), the X-rays needed to see between and under the teeth, a discussion of anything you'd like to change, and a written treatment plan with prices if any treatment is recommended.

How much does a consultation cost?

A private new patient examination, including X-rays, is £85. NHS examinations are free for NHS patients of the practice - our NHS list is currently open.

Do I need to prepare?

No. Bring a note of any medicines you take and any questions you have - the appointment is as much for those as for the examination.

Will I have treatment at the consultation?

Normally the examination and the plan come first, so you know what's proposed and what it costs before anything is done. If something urgent is found, we'll deal with the pain and book the rest.

Do you treat NHS and private patients?

Yes. City Dental Care is a mixed NHS and private practice, and we are currently accepting new NHS and private patients.

How do I book an appointment?

You can book online through our website, or call the practice on 0131 228 2442. We are open until 8pm Monday to Thursday, and until 5pm on Friday.

Where is the practice?

We are at 9 Earl Grey Street, Edinburgh, EH3 9BN - in the heart of Edinburgh, a short walk from Haymarket Station.

Is there parking at the practice?

Yes - the Princes Exchange Car Park is in our own building, accessed from Riego Street at the rear (9/2 Riego Street, EH3 9BL). Parking is payable: £3 for 1 hour, or £5 for up to 3 hours. The car park opens at 9:30am, so if you are driving to an earlier appointment we suggest street parking nearby. Blue Badge holders can park free on Fountainbridge, and we are a short walk from Haymarket Station.

What the Examination Covers

Teeth:

Every tooth checked for decay, cracks, wear and failing fillings, with X-rays to see between the teeth and under existing work.

Gums:

Gum health measured, not guessed - early gum disease rarely hurts, which is why it's checked at every visit.

Soft tissues:

A check of the cheeks, tongue, palate and throat for anything unusual - a routine mouth-cancer screen at every examination.

Bite and jaw:

How the teeth meet, signs of grinding or clenching, and the jaw joints.

What you'd like to change:

If there's something about your smile you'd like to discuss - crowding, staining, a chipped edge - this is the place to raise it. No pressure either way.
