Bonding and whitening before and after - a City Dental Care patient
Composite bonding and whitening together. The upper front teeth were bonded, which gives them their new shape and colour. Whitening lightens natural teeth only, and results vary.

Why Whitening from a Dentist, Not a Kit Online?

In the UK, teeth whitening is a dental procedure: only a registered dentist can prescribe it, and only after examining your teeth. That check is the point. It catches the things a shop-bought kit can't — untreated decay, gum problems, and crowns or fillings that won't change shade — and it means the trays are made to fit your teeth exactly, so the gel stays where it should.

The whitening assessment is where that happens, and it is a free cosmetic consultation: it includes no paid examination. We take a deposit when you book, under our Failure to Attend policy, and it is refunded when you attend; we confirm the amount when you book. A free consultation is an initial consultation, not a full dental examination. If you need or want a full examination, it is charged at our published private fee: £85 for new patients and £55 for existing patients, x-rays included. NHS examinations are free for NHS patients of the practice.

How Teeth Whitening Works at City Dental Care

Home whitening, prescribed and supervised by your dentist — four steps.

Assessment:

Any of our dentists can assess you. Your dentist examines your teeth and gums, confirms whitening is suitable, and tells you honestly what shade change to expect for your teeth. This is a free cosmetic consultation. We take a deposit when you book, under our Failure to Attend policy, and it is refunded when you attend; we confirm the amount when you book.

Digital scan:

A quick digital scan of your teeth is used to make your custom whitening trays — no messy impressions.

Fitting and first application:

At a short fitting visit your dentist checks your custom trays fit well, and you do your first application here in the chair: you load the gel yourself while your dentist checks the amount and the fit, and shows you how to wipe away any excess. You then carry on at home, with clear instructions on how long to wear the trays; most patients whiten over around two weeks.

Review and top-ups:

If you'd like, we check your result and how your teeth have responded. Your trays are yours to keep, so a top-up later means fresh gel from your dentist, not new trays.

What to Expect — Honestly

Results vary:

Surface staining from tea, coffee and wine responds well; greyer discolouration from inside the tooth responds less. Your assessment sets realistic expectations before you spend anything.

Natural teeth only:

Crowns, veneers and white fillings keep their existing shade. If you have visible ones at the front, we plan around them so nothing ends up mismatched.

Side effects are possible:

Some people notice sensitivity to cold or sweet things, sore gums or throat, or white patches on the gums while whitening. These are usually temporary, and we can adjust how you wear the trays if anything bothers you.

It lasts, with upkeep:

Results commonly last a year or more depending on habits. Because you keep your trays, a top-up means fresh gel from your dentist — not a new kit.

Why Have Whitening at City Dental Care?

A dentist checks first:

Every kit is prescribed after your dentist has examined your teeth at your assessment — whitening over an untreated problem is what we're here to prevent.

Evenings until 8pm:

Assessment and fitting visits are short. Ours fit after work, Monday to Thursday (until 5pm on Friday), in the city centre a short walk from Haymarket Station.

The price in writing:

£350, published here and on our price list, with 0% finance over 6, 9, 10, 11 or 12 months if you'd rather spread it.

What Does Teeth Whitening Cost in Edinburgh?

Our home whitening kit is £350 — around £29 a month over 12 months on 0% finance. The teeth whitening cost guide explains what's included and compares the options, and the full price list covers everything else. One honest tip before you book: whitening brightens teeth but doesn't straighten them — if alignment bothers you too, many patients straighten first with Invisalign and finish with whitening.
