At City Dental Care, we focus on keeping your smile healthy and confident. Our general dentistry services combine preventative dental care and restorative dental solutions tailored to your needs. We welcome new patients seeking top-quality dental services in Edinburgh with a personal touch.
General dentistry is the everyday care that keeps your teeth and gums healthy, and the treatment that repairs or replaces them when something goes wrong: check-ups and hygiene visits, fillings, root canal treatment, crowns, extractions, and bridges, dentures or implants to replace missing teeth.
City Dental Care is a mixed NHS and private practice at 9 Earl Grey Street, a short walk from Haymarket Station. Our NHS list is open, with no waiting list, and we are accepting new private patients too. You don't have to choose one or the other: many patients keep their check-ups on the NHS and have some treatment privately.
Private fees are published on our pricing page, and any treatment we recommend is quoted in writing before it is booked. We are open from 8.30am to 8pm Monday to Thursday and from 8.30am to 5pm on Friday. Each service below has its own page with more detail on what's involved.
Regular appointments include check-ups, which are essential for detecting cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems, and for avoiding severe health complications.
NHS fillings for registered patients and private white fillings from £99.75, priced before treatment starts.
Same-day emergency appointments, open until 8pm Monday to Thursday, and until 5pm on Friday. Private visits need no registration; call first and reception will do their best to see you the same day.
Your teeth and gums are clean with our hygiene service because it helps remove plaque buildup that can lead to gum disease.
Wisdom teeth cause discomfort and problems for us. If you're facing these, we'll work gently and effectively to remove them for a smooth recovery.
Simple and surgical extractions under local anaesthetic when a tooth can't be saved, with the fee confirmed in writing before anything starts.
NHS dental care for babies, children and teenagers, free for under-26s in Scotland, with fluoride varnish and first visits at your child's pace.
For individuals who need dental implants because they have lost one or more teeth, you should consult to determine the most suitable procedure to regain your functionality and smile.
Our root canal therapy removes infected pulp to save your tooth and prevent it from decay. Our clinicians work quickly and gently, with your comfort front of mind throughout.
A crown, inlay or onlay rebuilds a tooth that needs more protection than an ordinary filling can give. NHS and private patients welcome.
Our dental bridge service fills the gap left by missing teeth, restoring better chewing function and facial appearance.
Full and partial dentures to replace one, several or all of your teeth, with an itemised price in writing before anything starts.
A removable guard, made to fit your teeth and worn at night, that protects them from the wear and breakage grinding can cause.
Most people come to us for one of three reasons. Start with the one closest to yours.
Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, including a routine mouth-cancer check, and takes the X-rays needed to see between the teeth. If anything needs doing, you leave with a written plan and prices. Your next check-up is timed to suit your mouth rather than the calendar, and if it has been years, you are welcomed back, not told off. A private new patient examination is £85 including X-rays. NHS examinations are free; any X-rays and treatment you need are charged at NHS rates unless you're exempt. Booking an NHS examination online takes a £10 holding fee, which is credited against any treatment or refunded in full if you need none or are exempt; booking by phone carries no holding fee. More on dental check-ups and consultations.
The problems we treat as emergencies include severe or worsening toothache, a swollen face or gum, a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth that hurts, bleeding that won't stop, and a lost filling or crown that's causing pain. Call 0131 228 2442 as early in the day as you can and reception will do their best to see you the same day. A private emergency appointment needs no registration with us and is £85, including any X-rays needed, a temporary filling or dressing to settle the pain, a prescription if needed, and a simple extraction if one can be done in the same appointment. NHS emergency appointments are for our registered NHS patients and are booked by phone. A lost filling or crown that isn't hurting can usually wait until the next working day. When we're closed, phone NHS 24 on 111; between 5pm and 6pm on a Friday, after we close and before NHS out-of-hours cover starts, NHS 24 will direct you to Chalmers Dental Centre if you need to be seen. If swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, or affects your breathing or swallowing, call 999 or go to A&E. More on same-day emergency care.
Gums that bleed when you brush, bad breath that brushing doesn't shift, tartar near the gumline and staining from coffee, tea, wine or smoking are all signs you're due one. Gum disease isn't always painful, so it's easy to miss. Private hygiene is direct access: you can book with our dental therapists without seeing a dentist first. A standard hygiene appointment is £65, and Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is £110. NHS hygiene treatment needs a prescription from one of our dentists, so NHS patients start with a check-up. More on hygiene services.
Prefer to spread the cost of routine private care? Our Practice Plans start at £19.50 a month, plus a one-off £9.50 joining fee, and include two examinations and two or four hygiene visits a year, standard or GBT depending on the plan. The joining fee is not charged again if you change plan or continue into another year. Still unsure which you need? Call 0131 228 2442 and reception will help you choose the right appointment. If you're nervous, tell us when you book and the appointment is paced around you.

Our dental practice at 9 Earl Grey Street, Edinburgh, provides NHS and private dental care, with private treatments such as Invisalign and teeth whitening, and evening appointments until 8pm Monday to Thursday (we close at 5pm on Friday).
