Why are there two Invisalign prices?

Because there are two very different treatments. Invisalign Lite (from £1,900) treats one arch - upper or lower - and suits milder crowding or spacing. Invisalign Full (from £3,499) treats both arches and handles more complex movement. Which one your teeth actually need is decided at a consultation, not by preference alone.

How much does Invisalign cost in Scotland?

Invisalign is private, so prices vary by practice and by case. Ours in Edinburgh start from £1,900 for Invisalign Lite (one arch) and from £3,499 for Invisalign Full (both arches), with 0% finance available.

What does 'from' mean in the price?

The starting price for a straightforward case. More complex movement can need more aligners and more refinements, which is reflected in your individual quote. You get the exact price for your case in writing before treatment starts - never after.

Can I pay for Invisalign monthly?

Yes - 0% finance is available on treatment plans from £250 up to £5,000, repaid over 6, 9, 10, 11 or 12 months. As an example, Invisalign Lite at £1,900 spread over 12 months works out at around £158 a month, interest free.

Is Invisalign available on the NHS?

No. Invisalign is always private, at any age and whether or not you're an NHS patient; the under-26 NHS rule does not cover it. NHS orthodontic treatment is a separate route, usually provided by an orthodontist after a referral from your dentist, and only for a clear clinical need graded on the IOTN scale. In Scotland you can mix NHS and private care in a hybrid plan, so having Invisalign privately doesn't affect your NHS registration or routine NHS care with us.

Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes. Without a retainer, teeth can drift back towards where they started, and because teeth can keep changing position throughout life, NHS inform says keeping them straight for good means wearing one part-time for life. Retainers are part of every aligner plan with us; ask what a replacement would cost.

What decides which one you need

It comes down to how far your teeth need to move, not how much you want to spend:

How crowded or spaced your teeth are — milder cases need fewer aligners.
Whether one or both arches are involved — many people only need their visible arch treated; others need both to bite together properly.
Bite correction — fixing how the teeth meet is more work than straightening alone.
Refinements — teeth are living things; some cases need extra aligner stages to finish perfectly, which is planned into your quote.

Your consultation is free. We take a deposit when you book, under our Failure to Attend policy, and it is refunded when you attend; we confirm the amount when you book. A free consultation is an initial consultation, not a full dental examination. If you need or want a full examination, it is charged at our published private fee: £85 for new patients and £55 for existing patients, x-rays included. NHS examinations are free for NHS patients of the practice. If you decide to go ahead with Invisalign, we take a digital 3D scan of your teeth at no extra cost to build your plan. The plan also uses advanced imaging. You will see the projected result before you commit to treatment, and the exact price for your case in writing.

Spreading the cost

0% finance is available on treatment plans from £250 up to £5,000, over 6, 9, 10, 11 or 12 months. As a worked example: Invisalign Lite at £1,900 over 12 months is around £158 a month, interest free. Retainers after Invisalign

When your last aligner comes out, a retainer holds your teeth in place while the gum and bone around them settle. Align Technology, which makes Invisalign, warns that without retainers teeth can relapse towards where they started, and NHS inform says keeping them straight for good means wearing one part-time for life. Retainers can be removable or fixed (bonded to the teeth) and are part of every aligner plan with us, not an extra to think about later. They can need repairing or replacing over the years, so ask what a replacement would cost when you get your written quote.

Can you get Invisalign on the NHS in Scotland?

No. Invisalign is always private, at any age and whether or not you’re an NHS patient. NHS orthodontic braces are a separate treatment, available in Scotland only under strict criteria, and NHS inform lists “invisible” braces among the types available privately. Whether you qualify is decided with the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), used for NHS orthodontics in dental practices in Scotland since 1 October 2011 and usually assessed by an orthodontist after a referral from your dentist. It grades dental health need from 1 to 5, with a scale of 10 photographs to judge appearance in borderline cases:

Grade 1, almost perfect teeth: not available on the NHS.
Grade 2, minor irregularities such as teeth slightly out of line: not normally available.
Grade 3, greater irregularities that normally don’t need treatment for health reasons: case by case, depending on how the teeth look.
Grades 4 and 5, more severe problems such as upper front teeth sticking out by more than 6mm: considered for NHS treatment.

You also need a good standard of oral health, and NHS inform warns that waits can run from 6 months to 2 years or more. NHS inform notes that adults can start orthodontic treatment at any age, though what can be done is more limited. NHS orthodontic treatment (not Invisalign) is free for a course started before your 26th birthday if you have a clear clinical need; for a course started at 26 or over, NHS patients pay 80% of the NHS fee, capped at £384 per course of treatment, unless exempt (for example pregnant women and new mothers, and people on certain benefits). If you might qualify, ask your dentist about a referral first. Teeth only slightly out of line are NHS inform’s example of grade 2, so straightening them is usually a private choice, and having it done privately does not affect your NHS care with us.
